Plan of the space (pdf file, opens in Adobe Illustrator).

The room

There are several pawer sockets behind the screen (including some with a timer switch), and two power sockets at the back of the room on the left as you face the sceen.

Access to the area behind the screen is through a small door to the right as you face the screen.

It is generally possible to mount equipment to the wall, if a suitable case can be made for doing so.

Space Constraints

Beta_space is a public space. Nothing which isn't safe (i.e. cables on the floor), or bulit for it (i.e. fragile sensors) should be physically accessible to the public without constant supervision. Images of the public should not be stored without their permission.

For health and safety reasons, nothing can be hung from the ceiling grid. There is a projector pole hanging from the ceiling which will take the weight of a medium projector.

The space is not sonically isolated from the rest of Cyberworlds. This means there will be audio spill from the other exhibits in the exhibition.

It is not possible to paint the walls. It has been known for adhesive text to be attached, but this was a special case.

Lighting configuration can be changed by arrangement.

Tables and chairs are available by arrangement, but generally require supervision.

Installed Hardware

Computer: An Apple Ultimate G4 Mac with Dual 733MHz processors 1Gb RAM, DVD-RW, firewires 400 and 800, 120Gb HDD, GeForce4 Titanium w/128MB DDR VRAM, Superdrive.

Single, short, ethernet cable which normally supplies internet to the G4. To supply internet to more than one computer, or computers in front of the screen, an ethernet hub and cables will be necessary.

1.8m x 2.4m rear projection video wall (1024 x 768 resolution)Stereo Sound through ceiling-mounted speakers

Camera ports underneath centre of the screen and ~1.5m high on the left (as you face it) of the screen. There is clearance between the top of the screen and the ceiling mesh to clamp more equipment.

iSight Camera (the powerhouse's)

Sony DCRPC1000B 3CCD Camera with firewire output.

Small monitor for backstage work. This does not fit through the access door, and must be lifted over the top of the screen.

Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. Mouse is rechargable; keyboard takes AA batteries. Wired mouse and keyboard is available too.

Grid of 6 x 6 floorpads, wired to a custom interface box, connected to the computer via a Keyspan serial-USB converter. Each pad is approx 730 x 510mm. There are Max and Director objects available for programming with the floorpads.

Installed Software

OS X 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 by arrangement.

Macromedia Director MX

Cycling '74 MAX/MSP + Jitter 4.5

Software Specifications

Unless the installation is to be supervised, any installations in beta_space must load and initialise on boot up with no human intervention. Software should be thoroughly load-tested (i.e. with multiple users) and crash-tested.

Poster Specifications

There is space for two mounted posters, 1200(w)x600(h) mm, abutting on the short side, opposite the entrance. CCS can print and mount these by arrangement. If only one poster is required, the other will be left white.

There are portable stands which hold double-sided A4 posters, for directions, introductions, etc.

4 screws (8mm diameter) are present in each corner (5cm ) to hold the poster to the frame.
